FITNESS

Buddy Up Fitness is a full-body workout class designed for our Athletes ages 12 and over. Our 8-10 station circuit training program is designed to combine activities that both increase heart rate and strengthen muscles, with particular attention to core strengthening and conditioning.
Our Buddy Up Fitness Coaches are Licensed Personal Trainers who have also completed our Buddy Up Fitness Training curriculum: a program specifically designed for training Athletes with Down syndrome. Volunteer Buddies are overseeing each station and working with our Athletes to provide support, ensure proper form and technique, track progress, and provide feedback. This helps our Athletes have fun and form bonds, while staying safe.

Fitness exercises consist of a variety of body weight and free-weight movements that allow for the program to be run with minimal use of complex equipment or machines.  Buddy Up Fitness is filled with challenges and enjoyment to help our Athletes improve their physical fitness and achieve their personal best.

Buddy Up Fitness has had a great, positive impact on Susan and she is happy to continue joining in the class.  Susan lost weight and got trimmer and stronger after being involved with a season of Fitness classes. This has helped her with her job and her busy weekly schedule.  Running and keeping up at each exercise station at Fitness class has helped Susan to move quicker and respond to change easier and become a better tennis player. Also, working hard at each exercise station has improved Susan’s focus and attention to detail.  Susan has formed strong bonds with the Coaches, Buddies and Athletes which has improved her confidence. In Susan’s words, “It was great!  I loved to do it.  I like working hard.  And learning new things. I loved having all the Coaches & Buddies & Athletes cheering for me and everyone!”

The well thought out stations each focus on a particular exercise and in total provide a full body workout.  Aidan is routine-oriented, and this structure works well for him. Core strength and endurance are two areas that Aidan has improved in since participating in Fitness. This contributed to Aidan completing his first 5K this spring at the 2FGR Run for Down syndrome, as well as learning to independently ride a bike this summer.

After being a part of Buddy Up Tennis for the last 6 years, I have witnessed the way it has adapted and evolved to the where it is today. Every single week our Athletes show up with a smile and a hug — work their hearts out for the entire session, and leave just as happy, if not more so, than when they came. Seeing the Athletes improving in fitness, listening to them mention they feel stronger and healthier, and witnessing physiques change and tone reminds me of just how beneficial – and necessary! – providing opportunities like this are.
