TENNIS

Buddy Up Tennis is a high-energy, adaptive tennis and fitness program for children and adults with Down syndrome (our Athletes). We enable our Athletes to flourish, succeed, and reach their fullest potential by providing a unique environment that combines tennis, fitness and social activities through our weekly 90-minute clinics.
Athletes begin to participate as young as five and our oldest is approaching fifty-five! Although ages vary, our Athletes are united by the common goals of inclusion, team-membership, growth, and success. Buddy Up Tennis provides an enjoyable supportive environment for our Athletes to progress throughout the program, foster friendships, build confidence and more. These building blocks and life skills are shaping our Athletes’ futures both on and off the courts.

Buddy Up Tennis hosts weekly clinics including 30 minutes of fitness conditioning and 60 minutes of professional tennis instruction. Athletes are partnered with volunteer Buddies to provide support, develop friendships, and reinforce the Coaches instructions. Coaches are trained to implement the Buddy Up Tennis Curriculum which was specifically created for our Athletes.

Buddy Up Tennis helped Walter lose over 30 pounds! He continues to do the exercises at home every morning that he learns at clinic. This program even helped him land a part-time job as a Desk Manager Assistant at the Kettering Tennis Center where Buddy Up Tennis is held!

– Walter & Carolyn (Athlete & Parent)

I’ve been honored to work with the Super Stars the past 9 years. I know the athletes call me coach and are markedly improved tennis players from when I first met them; however, I’m the one who has grown significantly from the experience. Each week I learn more about effective communication, the contagion of enthusiasm, and the benefits of patience and perseverance. I’d like to think my volunteering as a coach has made me a better dad, husband, friend, and colleague.

– Rob (Coach)

The encouraging atmosphere is the best part of Buddy Up Tennis. Even though I don’t play tennis, I love to play with the Athletes and help them build confidence and have a great time. I wish everyone at my school would take advantage of this opportunity, because it is my favorite part of the week and something I constantly look forward to.
